Phil Collins “I Missed Again,” 1980 | The Song That Changed Everything?

On his first album, Face Value, people had no problem accepting Phil as lead drummer on the still heard-everyplace song that defines anticipation: In The Air Tonight, 94 3/5 beats per minute. Here was a new sound, a stripped down American sound featuring a horn section borrowed from Earth, Wind and Fire.

This song isn’t one of the highest selling in Phil’s catalogue, but it was the song that changed everything: either people were ¬†going to accept Phil Collins playing shorter, simpler, more rhythmically American, in particular Motown Records as well as Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Bill Withers and the Stax and southern Motown ¬†groove type songs.
